Commission - Work in Progress

For the start of this washi tape artwork, I painted an 8” x 10” canvas with acrylic paint. I used blue and black to give the feel of action and menace.

I did a pencil sketch of this commission from an image I found online. The original artist is unknown.

Again, I pre-selected my washi tape rolls for my palette. I wanted to make sure that I was able to recreate the image and match the armor as closely as possible, but with my own ideas on how that was going to play out.

One of the challenges of washi tape is they tend to be small in width. You can imagine that creating a smooth, large area of the same color can be quite challenging.

This piece was especially challenging because I was working from another artist’s digital image. I definitely took creative license when it came to the golds on the artwork. I really wanted it to pop!

All in all, it came out better than I could have imagined. It wasn’t until after working on it close up for 10 weeks that I stepped back and took in the full image that was being created. It quite honestly took me aback. I was emotionally choked up by the beauty that was there before me. Washi tape is magic. It can really open up your world and ideas when using it as a medium.
