Past Commission - Work in Progress

Eggs and Bacon

For this commission, I started by using pencil to sketch the general shape of what was in my head on the canvas board. I tend to already have the rolls of washi tape selected before beginning. Sometimes I add more tape to my palette, sometimes I don’t end up using some of the rolls. It really depends on how the layering and colors start blending on the canvas.

You’ll notice that I might only use the edging of a washi tape in my artwork (see images 4 & 5) to get the effect I’m going for, like the edge of the eggs.

I also have fun finding washi tape that have words written on it. I was over the moon when I found the golden tape for the eggs. I cut out E G G and added it to the “good egg” — it’s the little things that make an artwork special.

I was most worried about getting the bacon just right. I really wanted to make it look almost edible, which meant a lot of layers and colors that would need to be used.

I find that placing the tape down on the canvas a little at a time is the best way to see what the washi tape will do. Quite honestly, sometimes the tape tries to move or curl in a way that I wasn’t previously wanting it to, and I have to make the decision to accept or reject what it wants to do. Mostly, I let it do what it wants. After all, this is the art of letting go.
